Day 1 Guatemala – January 12th 2011:
We left our Detroit hotel at 3:30am (which ment everyone was up at 2:30am). We took the shuttle to the airport and had lots of helpers (helpers with a fee) carry our 6 check bags and 4 carry-ons to the American Airlines gates. The line ups were huge and the sign-in system was caos, but after about 1 hour we had our boarding passes and we're ready for breakfast as we waited for our 6am flight.
The flight from Detroit to Miami was scheduled for 6am take off, but with the snow storm in Detroit, we had extra time to de-ice the plane plus some other technical difficulties – so our flight left Detroit around 7:30am (Seth slept on the plan from 6:30am to 8am and that was it for the entire day!).
Because of the late departure, we only arrived in Miami at 10:05 am and our next flight was scheduled to depart at 10:25am. Miami is a HUGE airport and by the time we got off the plane at 10:10am, we figured we'd miss the flight. With Diane carrying Eden and several carry-ons and Heath pushing Seth in the stroller and carrying several carry-ons, we RAN through the Miami airport and Heath got to our gate as they were calling our names and closing the doors! Gracias a Dios, Thank the Lord, we made it! Amazing!
Day 2 January 13th 2011– School office supplies packing up, so Heath and Seth are getting adjusted and Diane and Eden are working on play and literacy workshop for Monday. Group of 30 arrive on January 15th Saturday.
Day 3 January 14th 2011: I worked on workshop all day. We all walked up to El Colegio to practice our daily walk! It takes 20 minutes to subir and 10 minute a bajar. The angle going up is so steep that we take breaks every 5 minutes. My goal is to run up that hill by the end of our time here, or at least walk up without a break!
Seth ate 3 or more eggs for breakfast and plane bread, then he ate some chicken soup for lunch, and meat pasta with bread for supper. Clara made banana bread for dessert, it was fabulous. Marco and Clara bought Seth grapes and apples to snack on! They are fabulous. After Seth's siesta today, he has been a very good boy. Little by little. Oh and Eden continues to be a joy!
Seth learned feliz, triste, hasta luego, rojo, leche, and agua today.
We've spent $0.80 since we've been here on tienda food.
Day 4: January 15th – family trip to Antigua to shop and do internet...as we speak.
More later
I'm happy to hear (read!) that everyone is adjusting well. I looked at your photos too, wow that hill sure looks steep! --- Rachel
